New Year Eve in Hong Kong

Los Angeles

Hong Kong will say goodbye to 2017 in grand style.

With a fireworks display, performing arts and pyrotechnic show, it will be the city’s largest-ever New Year’s Eve production.

Hong Kong is known for its impressive firework displays, and this year, the city will present its most spectacular New Year celebrations yet. A party atmosphere will take over the entire city on New Year’s Eve as throngs of cheering revellers take part in the countdown. When the clock ticks down to midnight, a musical fireworks show will light up Hong Kong’s skies, exploding in a radiant shower of lights to illuminate beautiful Victoria Harbour. Join this spectacular New Year’s Eve party and welcome 2018 with all the excitement and glamour of a Hong Kong celebration.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board recently released details about the upcoming celebration, which will be particularly noteworthy this year as it also marks the grand finale of a year’s worth of festivities honoring the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Hong Kong is one of two Special Administrative Regions (SAR) in China, areas that have a high degree of autonomy functioning under a “one country, two systems” concept. The other SAR is Macau.

As part of the New Year’s Eve celebration, Hong Kong’s famous skyline will be illuminated in a range of vibrant colors launched from barges in nearby Victoria Harbor and rooftops on Hong Kong Island. The show will last 10 minutes and span across a 35 percent wider display area than past years, incorporating what is being described as a “pyrotechnic compilation of fireworks, and sound and light effects.”

“The visual show will be launched in synchrony with a vibrant soundtrack produced and composed by Asia’s renowned music director Chiu Tsang Hei,” the tourism board said in a statement.

Leading up to the fireworks extravaganza, Australian performing arts group Strange Fruit will perform at the Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier. The award-winning group has appeared at events around the world, including the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Strange Fruit will debut a new performance at the New Year’s Eve celebration, called “Deco-Sphere,” which incorporates gigantic, illuminated orbs on poles designed to deliver an exotic and theatric choreographed feat and there’s still more.

The Hong Kong celebration will also include pyrotechnic shooting stars that will be launched from rooftops around the city every 15 minutes starting at 11 p.m. The stars will be presented in four different colors representing love, health, happiness and wealth.

“Hong Kong’s New Year Countdown Celebrations have become one of the most anticipated countdown events in the world,” said HKTB US Director Bill Flora. “This year, the pyrotechnic event will be expanded in scale, exciting new effects, patterns and complexities. The addition of a performing arts show will round out a truly exceptional New Years Eve experience on Victoria Harbor.”

The grand celebration of Chinese New Year in Hong Kong is also worth visiting. As it is the city’s biggest and most colourful festival!
